The Proust Questionnaire
Answer these questions from the perspective of your character using their voice:
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Hey-yo, I’d say I’m livin’ the dream right now. I guess the only thing that’s missin’ is a little lady to share it with. What dream am I livin’? Well, I’m in the tourney on The G.O.A.T. Boat, buildin’ up kids to lurv basketball, and settin’ my sites on how I can improve my coaching gigs. And … ahem, I might be slayin’ my flirt game with Miss Pippa. You’d have to ask her about that … and if ya do, maybe do me a solid and report back your findings … if ya know what I mean.
What is your greatest fear?
Yikes, we’re getting deep. Well, okay, you want to get into the core of the Sam onion, well, dude, we can def go there. I guess given my age, my biggest fear is never havin' the big ‘ol family I’ve always wanted. I love my kiddos I coach, but I want my own, ya know. That, and I guess not leaving that lasting impact. Coaching is epic, but ya never know if you’re reaching the kiddos completely.
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
Hrm, wow, that’s a hard one. I try not to be down on myself, if ya know what I mean, dude. I like to just totally slay at life and not think about the bad. I guess maybe that could be bad. Toxic positivity. Or I guess my love of smack talkin'. It’s all in good fun, but sometimes maybe it comes off that I’m a bit of a bad sport. I’d never want to set that example for the kiddos.
What is the trait you most deplore in others?
I always lead with kindness, dude, so I’d say people that just cause drama, are rude, or just put out negativity, that just really wrecks me. Oh, and anyone that would ever harm animals. Not to get all extra, but I cannot stand animal abusers. I’m completely vegan, myself. Growin' up on a farm, ya learn how special each and every creature is, ya know.
Which living person do you most admire?
Oh Gosh, well, I hope I don’t tear up. I’d really like to say my dad, but sadly he’s passed. He … he was the best person I knew, ahem, sorry. He just made me so much of what I am, ya know what I mean, dude. But I gotta hand it to my mom for keepin' up with the farm, and the family, and really just allowin' me to be who I am along with my dad. I really should go visit her. Wow, dude, this question’s got me in my feels.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Ah, I’m just a simple farm gal, so I’m not really into all that showy stuff. I’m not even really a “treat myself” person. I guess I’d say, maybe takin’ the time away from the kiddos to compete on The G.O.A.T. Boat. It def seems like a luxury to this low maintenance gal.
What is your current state of mind?
Oh, man, I’m just so excited to be competin' in The G.O.A.T. Boat tourney, but also so hyped to meet all the new people on board. I am going to absolutely slay this tourney – one hundred!
What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Oh, boy, probably modesty. Haha. I wouldn’t call myself the least bit modest. I guess that’s why I love a good ol’ smack talk. I def have no shame. Slay all day and all that, ya know!
On what occasions do you lie?
My dad always told me the truth is better to tell, even if it could hurt someone, so I’m not big on lyin'. I guess with the kiddos, I fib a bit to motivate them. If a kiddo isn’t doing so great, I might throw out a “good job” as encouragement. Does that qualify as a lie, though? Don’t we all tell those little fibs?
What do you most dislike about your appearance?
I’ve been workin' on it, but I’ve always been “Gordita,” as I’d call myself, all my life. My family is big boned, we’re made for workin' a farm, tall, big frames, bulky, but it’s been hard bein' in sports and havin' to work hard to maintain my weight to improve things like my speed. I’d never want to be skinny and all that, but I do want to be healthy … I mean, if my dad had taken better care of himself, he might still be here … buuut, movin' on from that … ahem, next question …
Which living person do you most despise?
Oh, I don’t like to lead with hate, but if I had to answer, I’d say it’s not a person, but a group of thought. Groups that hate others for their differences. I just don’t understand that. But I’d never hate 'em back. I’d always try to educate 'em, ya know. It’s just the right thing to do.
What is the quality you most like in a man?
Oh, gosh, well all the qualities of my dad, I’d say. Kindness, empathy, supportiveness of women, supportiveness of a person being their authentic self, if you know what I mean. Believin' that women are equals, that we are all equals. Encouragement and knowin' nothin' is a “boy” or “girl” thing.
What is the quality you most like in a woman?
Oh, well, make this ol’ gal blush, why don’t ya? I guess I’d say, a good caretaker, a great sense of humor, beauty inside and out, a sense of adventure and goin' with the flow. Oh, look at me yappin’, you asked for one quality and I’m listin’ off everything …
Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
Oh, haha, probably ... ya know and dude and man and slay … and maybe, "great job!” at work. HAH! I really don’t like to think about that. I try to be well spoken given the whole bilingual thing. I may even try too hard with both languages.
What or who is the greatest love of your life?
Def my dad. I don’t think I’ll ever love anyone as much as him. I know it’s not a romantic-type love, if that’s what you’re gettin' at, but I do think he was my person … my person I’m soul bonded to almost, if ya know what I mean.
When and where were you happiest?
Oh, I was pretty stoked to be invited to The G.O.A.T. Boat tourney. I remember sittin’ in the gym at work when I got the call. I was whoopin’ and hollerin’. The kiddos thought I’d lost it. Haha!
Which talent would you most like to have?
Ahem, not to toot my own horn, but I think I have all the talents I’d ever want. Basketball is my passion, coachin' is a close second, and I’m just gonna say I’m slayin’ it. Just straight up!
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Oh, boy, I think I’d make my genetics a bit more … manageable, if ya will. Our whole family struggles with weight and diabetes. It’s rough and takes a lot of work to stay healthy.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Dude, totally gettin' to live my dream and play basketball as a career. How many folks can say they got to live their dream? I’m gagged to look back and realize how amazing my life has been.
If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?
Hrm, well, that’s a weird one. I am really so happy bein’ me, but growin' up with cows, and realizin' how wonderful they are to hang around, maybe I’d like to know what I’d be like to live in a cow's hooves, if ya will. Hah, can you imagine? Me out in the field grazin' … HaHA!
Where would you most like to live?
Oh, I’d probably like to get back to good ol’ Puerto Rico at some point, maybe help my mom with the farm, or have my own. Maybe take my family there once I start one. Or retire there. It’s just so peaceful there to me, and def reminds me of my dad.
What is your most treasured possession?
Oh, gosh, the tears might start flowin’ again. My dad gave me this little girly basketball, totally not my style, back when I was a kiddo, and I still have it. It’s pretty much deflated, but it’s always displayed somewhere in my home. I know it’s a bit silly, but it’s the ball I learned with and every time I look at it, so many great memories come back to me, ya know.
What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
Oh, I’ve been there, losing a parent just sucks hardcore, especially one that was just … one of the best, ya know. It took a long time for me to recover from losin' my dad. I still keep him in my heart always. It’s just something ya can’t imagine until ya go through it, ya know.
What is your favorite occupation?
I totally thought basketball would be my fav, but coachin' the kiddos is just next level. I never imagined I’d get to do somethin’ so meaningful … with so much impact, ya know.
What is your most marked characteristic?
HaHA! I’ve been told I’m loud, but also just a big ol’ teddy bear. I’m always there if someone needs a shoulder to cry on, or a hug, or just someone to listen. I know I love my smack talk, but I’m a huge softie at heart.
What do you most value in your friends?
Support. Sometimes goin' through hard things, like with my dad, friends don’t quite feel like friends anymore. It’s the ones that are supportive and stick with you through the hard times that you realize are the real keepers.
Who are your heroes in real life?
Oh, ya gotta know, I’m gonna say my dad. And, of course, my mom, as well. She’s given me a great example as a strong woman and a woman that survived the love of her life and had to keep on truckin’.
What are your favorite names?
Hrm, well that’s tricky. I’ve always liked names with a little punch … like Archer or Blaze. I haven’t thought a lot about that. I guess I never really liked Samantha, but I do really like Sam. It feels perfect for me. I’m glad my ‘rents allowed me to go by Sam.
What is it that you most dislike?
Haha, okay, I’m going to be a little surface level on this one, but I really dislike bland food. I’ve gotten to travel around the states and there’s just some food I don’t know how people eat! Where’s the flavor?
What is your greatest regret?
I guess I wish I could’ve gone professional, but ya know, it just wasn’t my path. Sometimes I feel really guilty … I don’t know if I’d call it regret, but maybe … anyway, I feel some sort of way for leavin' my mom back on the farm in Puerto Rico when I pursued my dreams.
How would you like to die?
When I’m very old. My dad died so young. I just want to get the most out of life. See my kids have kids, and maybe their kids have kids. Then maybe pass peacefully in my sleep on my lil’ Puerto Rican farm.
What is your motto?
“Always lead with kindness”. Kindness is so important to me. Ya just never know what someone is going through, ya know.
