SUMMARY

NAME:

Janitor

ROLE:

Mysterious and snarky custodial staff member for The G.O.A.T. Boat, NPC quest giver

STORY GOAL:

First and foremost, Janitor views his career with the utmost seriousness and takes pride in the high-level of sparkle and shine abroad The G.O.A.T. Boat. That doesn’t mean he’s averse to having a little bit of fun, even if his methods are slightly sarcastic and hard to read. He’d happily challenge anyone to score an impossible number of points, even if he doesn’t quite understand why everyone on board is obsessed with whatever brand of sportsball The G.O.A.T. Boat is celebrating. After all, shouldn’t it be him that gets the credit for creating such an amazing experience for all the passengers on board? Why should all the athletes and rich and famous get all the attention?

STORY Motivation:

Janitor seeks to stump MP with the most difficult challenges he can dream up. The only issue is, he doesn’t quite know if they are challenges. And besides, by taking down MP, he can finally get all the credit he deserves as master of his janitorial craft.

The Basics

FULL NAME:

Janitor … he would never share his birthname, what fun would that be?

AGE:

40s

PLACE OF Birth:

Fort Wayne, Indiana

Male

nationality:

American

ETHNICITY:

Janitor’s ancestry is a bit of a mystery, but from talks with his folks, he’s gathered his roots are German and Irish.

Education:

Joining the Army after high school for structure, Janitor found his passion for cleanliness and order from the military and decided to make it his life’s work.

occupation:

He’s a janitor, cleanliness aficionado, and main man representing the custodial staff on board The G.O.A.T. Boat.

CURRENT RESIDENCE:

Wherever he’s needed, Janitor can be found, solving every custodial challenge. He’s been cleaning aboard cruise ships for decades, allowing him to meet new people and have a little bit of sarcastic fun with them.

Psychology

PERSONALITY TYPE:

Using Myers Briggs Type Indicators, Janitor would be The Commander type (Extraverted, Intuitive, Thinking, Judging).

GOALS:

Janitor’s goals are simple … to be content and live life to the fullest he can! Even though he may appear curmudgeonly, he’s not an angry person deep inside, and his success in life depends on doing his job well day to day and living in the moment.

MOTIVATIONS:

Motivated to have fun, live in the moment, and be the best at his job, Janitor wants to spread joy in his unique way as an undercover trickster and comedic curmudgeon. Living the good life, realizing how lucky he is to be alive and taking advantage of his opportunity to live to the fullest is his main motivation for rolling out of bed every day.

INTERNAL CONFLICTS:

Janitor struggles with how he acted in his youth and the disappointment he caused his parents by getting in so much trouble. He really wishes he had a family and the “white picket fence” life but does really love his job and how he’s gotten to see so much of the world and meet so many people.

WEAKNESSES:

When it comes to dealing with other janitorial staff, Janitor can fly off the handle if they are lazy or sloppy. He doesn’t connect deeply with people and sometimes loneliness makes him feel rather dissatisfied with life.

DESIRES:

Janitor desires to live life to the fullest, have an illustrious career and meet some unique folks along the way.

FLAWS:

Janitor can appear closed off and too aggressive at certain times. He beats himself up for the mistakes he made in his youth. His career is his everything, so it makes it hard for people to be mainstays in his life.

SECRETS:

While he’s proud of serving in the military, Janitor cannot say it was his favorite life journey. He felt he should have enjoyed it more given his military family. It’s possible he suffers from some PTSD, although never diagnosed, which he pushes down or manifests into small jabs at other people's ex. While he wishes he had a wife and kids so badly, Janitor doesn’t share his thoughts on family life much with others. But part of him does long for another life … a quiet, country life on a farm with his wife and dozen or so kids.

STRENGTHS:

Fiercely independent, highly confident and friendly, Janitor is always willing to have nice light chats with people. Given his seriousness about his profession, he’s exceptionally clean.

FEARS:

Thoughts of dying alone, and never having a true connection with another human being plague Janitor. He worries about never having his accomplishments realized by others because of his misunderstood profession. A deep-seated fear that people will find out about his inner secrets and that he isn’t so content after all is always in the back of Janitor’s mind.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Janitor is proud of realizing his path in life early on, dedicating it to cleanliness and creating sparkling environments for others to enjoy. Solitarily traveling the world, he views the many stamps in his passport as a great accomplishment. He’ll always be grateful for ridding himself of drugs, alcohol and criminal behavior very young. It enriched his life.

MORALITY:

A “True Neutral”, Janitor is interested in just living life and making it the best by any means possible. He chooses not to concentrate on the divide of what is good or bad morality wise, but the way he can make life worth living for himself, and those around him.

IRRITANTS:

Disorganization and messiness are strong pet peeves for Janitor, and people that can’t take a joke or take life too seriously. He gets a little irked by working on The G.O.A.T. Boat and not caring one lick about basketball.

Legacy:

Janitor wants to touch other people’s lives in some way, whether it’s creating enjoyable experiences, joking around with them or having a light chat. He’d like to make a difference in the custodial industry and be remembered as one of its best and brightest. He’d love to see as much of the world as humanly possible, collect experiences, and share them with others by writing a memoir.

Appearance

EYES:

Brown

HAIR:

Brown hair, close cropped, side parted, clean cut, no facial hair

BUILD:

Tall, and a bit lanky, Janitor does have some muscle mass due to his commitment to his craft, and he’s all about putting “his guns” (as he calls them) to work with a good scrub.

GAIT:

Janitor walks confidently but can also fade into the background. He steps lightly and easily glides around decks with his trusty mops.

MANNERISMS:

Rather closed off, Janitor doesn’t like to use body language to express his emotions. He likes a good lean on his broom or against a wall when he takes a five second break from work. It can be ridiculously hard for other people to read if he’s being serious or sarcastic.

STYLE:

Janitor believes everyone should wear uniforms and hates the idea of personal style.

ACCESSORIES:

He can be found with the usual janitorial accessories … mop, broom, bucket, sponge, and task clipboard.

HEALTH:

Janitor’s line of work and his belief in a regimented diet result in an impeccably clean bill of health for his age. He staunchly believes in clean and mindful living, embracing sobriety since he was eighteen years old, and practicing morning yoga daily.

Communication

MANNER OF SPEECH:

Clipped and abrupt, Janitor’s speech can be monotone at times but resembles a drill sergeant when he gets hyped up, if he spies any of the janitorial staff slacking off or when his challenges aren’t met to his satisfaction.

ACCENT:

Janitor is a middle American corn-fed man with a deep, booming, and authoritative voice.

COLLOQUIALISMS:

Janitor prefers to be straight forward, doesn’t like the use of slang, doesn’t understand it and would never seek out what someone means by “cap\no cap.” He’d just go about his business and assume it’s unimportant to understand such poppycock.

BODY LANGUAGE:

Janitor is very closed off but loves a good lean against a wall or his mop. It’s truly where he finds his ultimate zen. His whole goal is for others to not know what he’s thinking, what kind of mood he’s in or his true authentic personality.

VOCABULARY:

Even though he’s picked up a few “fifty cent words” along the way, Janitor prefers his speech to be straightforward in the language he chooses to use … the tone, maybe not so much. He does appreciate a little word play and is, surprisingly, a fan of “Dad jokes” and puns.

EMOTION:

Janitor is not super emotional, except when it comes to work. Custodial work is his whole life and if anyone messes with it, he will get heated. Some see him as a bit gruff and mean spirited, but he doesn’t care as everything is in good fun and everyone should just relax a bit, in his opinion.

history

HOMETOWN:

Janitor doesn’t really consider anywhere home as he grew up with a father in the military and they moved around a lot. That’s probably why he likes traveling for work so much.

UPBRINGING:

Growing up in a lower middle-class home in a military family, Janitor spent most of his childhood in military housing, and didn’t have very deep relationships, so he spent a lot of time getting into trouble with the random friends that accepted him during middle school and high school. Always the class clown in elementary school, Janitor enjoyed being a trickster and making people laugh, sometimes at the expense of classmates.
His lack of deep relationships and connections have informed his life, but he enjoys having surface level friendships and connections, and meeting new people.
Given how wonderful Janitor’s parents were to him, it was a shock to them when he got into trouble in high school for possession. Deeming himself an utter disappointment to his loving parents, he began to search for more structure in his life, and his dad encouraged him to keep up the military legacy and investigate enlisting.

EDUCATION:

After graduating from high school and joining the Army right away, Janitor found his love for the custodial industry through the strict cleanliness requirements of his commanding officer.

HOBBIES:

Cleaning, cleaning, and more cleaning! But when he’s not cleaning, he loves to mess with people utilizing his unique brand of snark.

DREAMS:

Currently living his dream, Janitor loves traveling the world and honing his craft of cleanliness.

HEROES:

Janitor considers all his relatives that served in the military to be great heroes, but his father is his number one role model and mentor.

REGRETS:

Getting into a fair amount of drug and alcohol related mischief in his youth and disappointing his parents, Janitor deeply wishes he could turn back time and strike that black era from the record.

WORK HISTORY:

After serving four years in the Army, Janitor started as a custodial staff member at a high school in a small town in his birth state of Indiana.
Once he had some experience under his belt, he worked at different schools around the country, and then craving something different, decided to take a job working in a casino in Las Vegas for a few years. While on the casino floor, he met a cruise ship director at a bar when he was polishing up the floors who was impressed by his work and told him to call him if he ever needed another, more exciting gig.
Since that time, he’s been traveling the world, working on cruise ships and picking up odd jobs. And he wouldn’t have it any other way!

MAJOR LIFE EVENTS:

Getting into drugs and alcohol very young had a profound effect on Janitor’s life, especially when he got arrested for possession as a minor. The Army gave him all the structure he needed in life and led him to his passion as a cleanliness specialist. Now he’s living the dream, traveling around the world, meeting new people, and growing the next generation of custodial experts.

FOUNDATIONAL MEMORIES:

While moving around the country in his youth was always exciting, Janitor never completely bonded with anyone, but was friendly enough to make connections wherever he went. Although he was always a jokester and did get in trouble from an early age, his parents never had to tell him to clean his room, and his trouble making was in the realm of drugs, alcohol, minor theft, and vandalism. Janitor respects his dad immensely, looks up to him and thinks of him fondly. Playing catch in the evenings with his father is one of his most treasured memories.

CHARACTERS

The Proust Questionnaire

Answer these questions from the perspective of your character using their voice:

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

What kind of deep poppycock is this? Do I really have to answer something so silly? Okay, okay, fine. Idea of perfect happiness … well, just picture it, sparkling decks, crystal clean toilets, a chocolate on every pillow, a fellow in a blue uniform lurking around every corner, daggers for eyes. Is he friend or foe? Silly question answered!

What is your greatest fear?

Okay, seems best I should just strap right in for more of the same. A hundred kids, one ball pit, and they’ve all been given a sucker. Yikes!

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

You do see the handsome devil you’re looking at, right? How could I have any “deplorable” … as you said … attributes? I certainly would never play practical jokes on anyone, and I have no idea what the word sarcasm means.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?

Easy! People that ask too many questions. That just really grinds my gears. What exactly are we trying to accomplish here? Can we get to the point?

Which living person do you most admire?

You … because of your determination to get something newsworthy out of me when I really just want to get back to mopping.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Involving myself in whatever sportsball mumbo jumbo is going on aboard the ship. Can you believe these guys … they’ll do anything for piddly little rewards. But what a blast watching them sweat!

What is your current state of mind?

Hungry. Thirsty. I need a nap. Wow, these questions are a bit invasive. Next are you going to ask my inner most secrets. Bah, as you can tell, I’m an open book!

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

They say patience is a virtue, right? Well, I’m practicing it right now. So, let’s flip this on its head, patience is the most underrated virtue.

On what occasions do you lie?

Never. Ever. I already told you, I’m an open book.

What do you most dislike about your appearance?

I find this question insulting. You do see what a dashing specimen you are looking at? Not a wrinkle on this forty-something year old face.

Which living person do you most despise?

Can I also say you because these questions are really uninspired and incredibly invasive … HAH, kidding, or am I?

What is the quality you most like in a man?

All of my qualities.

What is the quality you most like in a woman?

All of my qualities, but she’s a woman.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

The. A. Is. Me. I. Us. Those are used a lot in sentences.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

I feel like you need to buy me a virgin cocktail before I can answer that question. Or is this your way of asking me on a date and becoming the greatest love of my life?

When and where were you happiest?

Oh, probably an hour ago before I was pelted with all these questions. It was just me and the ocean breeze.

Which talent would you most like to have?

The talent to make people disappear. I’m not saying I’d use it on you, but I’d use it on you …

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Who am I to change perfection?

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

My greatest achievement will be getting through this conversation and interaction.

If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?

I’d come back as anything without ears and a mouth, so I wouldn’t have to hear or answer these questions.

Where would you most like to live?

Wherever it is that interviews and … the such are outlawed? Does that place exist?

What is your most treasured possession?

Well, meet Squiggles, my trusty mop. It comes with a companion bucket named Foxy Boxy. They are engaged. Would you like an invite to their wedding?

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

This conversation.

What is your favorite occupation?

What does it look like? Oh, you think all janitors hate their job. That seems a bit judgemental!

What is your most marked characteristic?

My charisma, charm, approachability, honesty, gorgeous hair and bright smile.

What do you most value in your friends?

Peace and quiet.

Who are your heroes in real life?

Squiggles the mop has seen some stuff. I really look up to him for getting through some of the worst … and sometimes without his love Foxy.

What are your favorite names?

What’s yours? Because not that one.

What is it that you most dislike?

Are you repeating questions? I thought I already answered this one. And I repeat … this conversation.

What is your greatest regret?

Starting this interaction.

How would you like to die?

Well, I hope I don’t die from the boredom of this conversation.

What is your motto?

To quote a purple dinosaur, “Clean up, clean up, everybody, everywhere!”
